SMALL GRANTS STORIES: Chourouk Travel

COVID-19 Response / Articles / 28-08-2023

Chourouk Travel is much more than a travel agency. It's the story of two best friends who have known each other for over 15 years and who decided to share their passion for travel with the world.

We met in Sousse in 2007 in a travel agency where we worked in the ticketing and hotel departments. Over the years, we built a solid portfolio of contacts, customers, and partners, who really valued our quality services. Even so, we both lost our jobs after the 2011 revolution. This difficult period of unemployment made us realize that our sector was highly vulnerable to economic shocks, and that its survival depends essentially on the country's security situation.

At that time, to boost the sector, the Tunisian government eased the conditions for opening a travel agency. We capitalized on this situation by launching Chourouk Travel in 2016 to offer a wide range of services to our customers, from ticketing to hotel bookings to package tours.

As business owners with great experience and clients, we thought that our former difficulties were behind us and that we could overcome any challenges. Then COVID-19 hit. Our standard days were spent attempting to manage extreme health restrictions, cancelled flights and bookings, and hotel closures.

The COVID-19 Business Recovery Grant Fund established by the US government as part of its USAID Tunisia JOBS program helped us sustain our jobs in those difficult times, purchase IT equipment, and meet our expenses during the health crisis.

Today, everything is moving in the right direction: flights and hotels are fully booked, and we are proud to have withstood these conditions, ready to take on any challenge.
